When Operation Smile began in 1982, no one ever imagined it would grow and expand so quickly, capturing the vision of people the world over dedicated to creating change for a better world. Today, thousands of children around the globe are living normal lives. However, it was not the surgeons and nurses alone that have helped tens of thousands of children, it was and is the thoughtful, energetic, and bright individuals like yourself that help these miracles happen.
Operation Smile Jordan’s Student Volunteers program was established in 2004. Originally formed by a small number of volunteers from different universities and schools, it has grown to include more than 200 students who are making a difference in the lives of children at home and abroad. Operation Smile Jordan Student Volunteers Program won the Outstanding International Student Club of the Year award in 2007. The award is given to an international student club that has demonstrated incredible dedication to Operation Smile’s student programs in the past year in leadership, service, awareness, education, and fundraising.
About Student Programs
The program aims to get high school and university students involved in community service in addition to learning the importance of addressing the dilemma of the less fortunate. Student volunteers' tasks include:
- Assisting in the organizational logistics prior and during missions
- Preparing required information and material for the mission
- Patients' registration
- Translation for the international medical team
- Assisting and directing patients and their families
- Entertaining children
- Organizing events for fund raising purposes
Operation Smile Jordan's Student Volunteers club is organized into seven major committees:
- Fundraising Committee
- Schools' Committee
- Media and Public Relations (PR) Committee
- Missions Committee
- IT/ Web Design Committee
- Human Resources (HR) Committee
- Social Committee
Each committee is comprised of a committee chair and its members. These seven committees are supervised by the Central Committee. Members of the Central Committee include the Student Program Coordinator, two assistants, a treasurer and Operation Smile Jordan’s Executive Director.
Members of the Student Volunteers Club not only assist with all aspects of the mission programs, but also with raising awareness, funds and assisting with patient follow-up care. Many student volunteers have gone on to become trained Patient Imaging Technicians (PITs), Medical Records Coordinators and Electronic Medical Records Coordinators (EMR) and some even serve as trainers for these volunteer medical mission positions. These student volunteers also participate in Operation Smile medical missions outside Jordan.
As Operation Smile Jordan’s Student Programs continues to grow it will include the creation of more Operation Smile clubs at high schools and junior high schools.
